Three kinds of no-exam coverage
Knowing which one you are being offered tells you most of what you need to know.
- Simplified issue: you answer health questions and the insurer checks records such as prescription history. You can be declined.
- Guaranteed issue: no health questions at all, higher cost, and a waiting period before the full benefit is payable.
- Accelerated underwriting: a fully underwritten policy where healthy applicants can skip the exam based on data the insurer reviews.
The trade-offs
Skipping the exam is faster and more convenient. In exchange, simplified and guaranteed issue policies usually cost more for the same benefit and offer lower coverage limits than fully underwritten policies. If you are in good health and want a large amount of coverage, an exam may get you a better price.
Answer health questions accurately
Insurers can review and contest a claim during the contestability period, typically the first two years. A misstatement on the application can lead to a reduced or denied claim, so accurate answers protect your beneficiaries.
Common questions
How quickly can no-exam coverage start?
Some applications are decided within minutes or days, though timing depends on the insurer and your answers. Coverage starts only once the insurer approves the application and the first premium is paid.
Is no-exam the same as guaranteed acceptance?
No. Many no-exam policies still ask health questions and can decline you. Only guaranteed issue policies accept every eligible applicant.
