How insurers view truck driving
Commercial driving is treated as an ordinary occupation by most life insurers. Some ask extra questions about hazardous materials, oversize loads or ice-road and similar specialty work, and may price those differently. Tell the agent exactly what you do so they can point you to insurers that are comfortable with it.
Your driving record counts
Life insurers pull motor vehicle reports. A clean record helps. Recent DUIs, reckless driving charges or a string of moving violations can raise the price or delay an offer until some time has passed.
Health on the road
Long hours sitting, irregular sleep and limited food choices show up in underwriting. The conditions agents hear about most from drivers are listed below. None of them rules out coverage, but each affects which policies fit.
- High blood pressure and cholesterol
- Type 2 diabetes
- Sleep apnea, including whether you use a CPAP
- Weight
- Tobacco use
Owner-operators and gaps in coverage
If you own your truck, you probably have no employer life insurance, and you may have a truck loan and a family that depends on your settlements. Occupational accident coverage and a DOT physical are not life insurance. A policy you own yourself stays with you whoever you lease on with.
Common questions
Do truck drivers pay more for life insurance?
Usually not because of the job alone. Health, tobacco use and driving record have far more effect on the price than the occupation does.
I am on the road for weeks. Can I apply by phone?
Many applications are taken by phone, and many policies need no medical exam. If an exam is required, insurers can usually schedule it at a location and time that fits your route.
Does my DOT medical card count as a life insurance exam?
No. A DOT physical certifies you to drive. Life insurers do their own underwriting, though they may ask about the same conditions.
