Graded Death Benefits and Waiting Periods, Explained

A graded death benefit means the policy does not pay its full amount if you die soon after buying it. It is standard on guaranteed issue policies and appears on some simplified issue policies too.

How it works

During the waiting period, usually the first two or three years, death from illness or natural causes typically pays a refund of premiums plus interest, or a percentage of the face amount. Many policies pay the full benefit for accidental death from the first day. Once the waiting period ends, the full benefit is payable for any covered cause.

Why insurers use it

When an insurer asks no health questions, the waiting period is how it manages the risk of covering people who are already seriously ill. It is the price of guaranteed acceptance.

How to avoid one

If your health allows it, a policy with health questions may offer full coverage from day one. Ask the agent directly whether the policy being quoted has immediate or graded benefits.

Common questions

Is a graded benefit the same as the contestability period?

No. Contestability lets an insurer review the application for misstatements, typically for two years. A graded benefit limits the payout regardless of how the application was answered.
